Cabinet Connection Methods

Cabinet Connection Methods: Cam Locks vs. Wood Dowels vs. Screws – Which Is Stronger?

When buying cabinets, everyone focuses on boards, eco-friendliness, and aesthetics – but few ask: how are the cabinets actually put together?

Yet this is exactly what determines whether your cabinets will wobble after two years, sag in the middle, or survive a move and be reassembled.

Here's a clear breakdown of the three main connection methods.

1. The Three Methods – What's the Difference?

Screw Connection

The most traditional method – drill and screw directly. Lowest cost, but repeated assembly can strip the threads, and cabinets loosen under load. Common in budget ready-made cabinets.

Cam Lock Connection (Three-in-One)

Consists of a cam, bolt, and pre-inserted nut – the mainstream method for panel-based custom cabinetry. Detachable, reusable, and clean-looking. But on its own, holding strength is average – it depends on the board's screw-holding capacity.

Wood Dowel Connection

Wooden dowels are inserted into drilled holes for positioning and load-bearing. High strength and precision, but difficult to disassemble and demands extremely tight machining tolerances.

2. Which Is the Strongest?

The answer: Cam locks + Wood dowels combined.

Premium custom cabinetry widely adopts this approach – wood dowels handle positioning and load-bearing, while cam locks handle locking and detachability. The two complement each other: strong yet re-assemblable.

Screws alone: cheap but loosen easily.
Cam locks alone: detachable but limited strength.
Wood dowels alone: strong but not detachable.

Combined use is the optimal solution.

3. How to Inspect Cabinet Connections On-Site

  1. Shake the cabinet firmly: Any rattling or wobbling means weak connections

  2. Press down on the front edge of a shelf: Obvious sagging means insufficient support

  3. Check inside the cabinet: Are the cam locks tightened? Are the dowels properly seated?

  4. Ask about disassembly: Can it be taken apart and reassembled without damage for future moves or layout changes?

4. Our Advice

  • Limited budget: Cam locks are the minimum standard – avoid screw-only cabinets

  • Prioritizing durability: Look for the cam lock + wood dowel combination

  • May move in the future: Must choose detachable connections – cam locks + dowels is the best pairing

  • Before signing: Confirm the connection method and put it in the contract

Cabinet strength hides where you can't see it. Choose the right connection method, and your cabinets will last – and move with you.
