Unit Cabinets vs Framed Cabinets

Unit Cabinets vs Framed Cabinets – Double Side Panels or Shared? Skip This Question, and Your Cabinets May Warp in a Few Years

When it comes to custom cabinets, most people focus on whether the boards are eco-friendly and whether the doors look good – but overlook a key question that determines your cabinets' lifespan: Is the cabinet structure unit-based or frame-based?

If you don't ask upfront, your cabinets may warp or sag within a few years.

1. What Is a Unit Cabinet?

Each cabinet box is built as an independent unit, with double side panels.

For example, a three-door wardrobe is assembled from three separate cabinet boxes. Adjacent boxes each have their own side panels, so there are two layers of board in between.

✅ Pros: Sturdy structure, strong load-bearing capacity, doors resist warping, and each unit can be adjusted independently.

❌ Cons: Uses more material, slightly higher cost.

2. What Is a Framed Cabinet?

The entire cabinet shares one frame, with shared side panels.

In the same three-door wardrobe, only the far left and far right have side panels. The dividers in the middle are single-layer shared boards.

✅ Pros: Saves material, lower cost, slightly more interior space.

❌ Cons: Weaker load-bearing capacity and stability. Wide doors are more prone to warping, and the cabinet is at higher risk of sagging overall.

3. The Differences at a Glance

4. Which Cabinets Require Unit Construction?

  • Wardrobes with wide doors: The wider the doors, the higher the demand for structural stability

  • Bookcases and storage cabinets: Shelves that bear weight can sag when side panels are shared

  • Wall-mounted cabinets: Hanging structures demand even greater stability

For small, non-load-bearing cabinets, framed construction can work – but confirm the supplier uses thickened boards.

5. Three Questions to Ask Before Ordering

  1. Do you use unit cabinets or framed cabinets by default?

  2. If framed, how thick are the side panels? Be cautious if under 18mm

  3. Can the cabinet structure be specified in the contract? Written terms are the safest bet

Many package deals use framed cabinets by default to save on materials. Always ask upfront and get it in writing.

Final Word

What makes cabinets last isn't just the boards and doors – the cabinet structure is the foundation. For load-bearing cabinets, prioritize unit construction. For small cabinets on a budget, framed construction can work – but verify board thickness and reinforcement design.
