Sliding Door vs. Hinged Door for Your Wardrobe?

Sliding Door vs. Hinged Door for Your Wardrobe? Don't Wait Until Installation to Regret – Read This Before You Decide

The first decision when customizing a wardrobe: hinged doors or sliding doors?

Many people get stuck on this choice – hinged doors look great but take up space, sliding doors save space but you worry about dust in the tracks. The right choice isn't about preference – it's about dimensions.

The Bottom Line: Choose Hinged If You Can

In terms of user experience and aesthetics, hinged doors are the top choice. Open the full panel and see all your clothes at a glance – easy access; close them and you get a sleek, minimalist look.

Sliding doors are more of a compromise when space is tight.

The Key Number: 60cm

Bedroom aisle width ≥ 60cm (approx. 24 inches) → You can go with hinged doors

Wardrobe depth is typically 55-60cm. When hinged doors swing open, they occupy the aisle space. 60cm is the minimum comfortable width to open the doors and still walk past.

Bedroom aisle width < 60cm → Sliding doors are your only option

If there's only 40-50cm between the bed and the wardrobe, hinged doors will hit the bed and won't even open. Sliding doors are the only way to go.

A Few Extra Tips

• Go with split-panel hinged doors for extra stability: Floor-to-ceiling doors look great but are prone to warping. Split-panel doors (top + bottom) look just as stylish and save you the cost of door straighteners

• Always choose top-hung tracks for sliding doors: Floor tracks collect dust and are a tripping hazard. Top-hung tracks are more attractive and easier to maintain

• Don't skimp on hardware: Whether it's hinges for hinged doors or wheels for sliding doors, you use them every single day. Brands like Blum and Hettich are worth the investment

Final Takeaway

Choose hinged doors if space allows; sliding doors only when space is limited.
