How to choose the depth of a wardrobe

Wardrobe Depth: 55cm, 60cm, or 65cm – Just 5cm Makes a Completely Different Experience

When customizing a wardrobe, most people focus on color and door style, but overlook one critical dimension: depth.

Choose the wrong depth, and thick coats won't let the door close properly – or you'll waste precious centimeters of space. Today, let's clear it up once and for all: 55cm, 60cm, or 65cm – how do you choose?

The Bottom Line First

DepthBest ForWatch Out For
55cmSmall apartments with tight spaceThick coats may press against the door
60cmMost householdsStandard size, safest choice
65cmHomes with many coats and down jacketsTakes up more space

In short: 60cm is the standard answer, 55cm is a compromise, 65cm is an upgrade.

55cm: Usable, But With Conditions

55cm is the "minimum usable depth" for hinged-door wardrobes.

  • What fits: Shirts, T-shirts, light jackets, pants

  • What doesn't: Thick down jackets, wide-shoulder coats – they'll press against the door, making it hard to close

  • Best for: Bedrooms with very limited space, or wardrobes mainly used for folded clothes rather than hanging thick items

If your household has lots of thick winter clothing, 55cm is not recommended.

60cm: The Standard Depth – Just Go With It

60cm is the industry-recognized standard wardrobe depth and the most recommended choice.

  • A standard hanger is about 40-45cm wide; with a thick coat, total depth reaches about 55-58cm

  • At 60cm, the door closes easily – no pressing on sleeves, no blocking the door

  • Works for both hinged and sliding doors

If you're not sure what to choose, 60cm will never let you down.

65cm: For Homes With Lots of Clothes and Thick Coats

65cm is 5cm deeper than standard, offering a more relaxed hanging experience.

  • Advantage: Thick down jackets and wide-shoulder coats hang with zero pressure; doors close effortlessly

  • Trade-off: Takes up more bedroom space – small apartments should think twice

  • Best for: Master bedroom wardrobes, walk-in closets, and homes with many long winter coats

If your bedroom width is limited, that extra 5cm might narrow your walkway. Be sure to confirm during measurement.

Sliding Doors vs. Hinged Doors: Different Depth Requirements

  • Hinged doors: A 60cm cabinet depth is sufficient – doors sit outside the cabinet, not affecting internal space

  • Sliding doors: A 65cm cabinet depth is recommended – the track takes up 8-10cm, reducing usable depth

If you're going with sliding doors, don't choose 55cm – otherwise hanging clothes will press against the door.

Final Thoughts

There's no absolute "best" wardrobe depth – only what fits your home.

  • Plenty of space → Choose 60cm or 65cm for comfortable use

  • Tight space → 55cm works, but accept that thick clothes won't hang well

  • Sliding doors → At least 65cm depth

The most important step: During measurement, have your installer give a clear recommendation based on your wall conditions, walkway width, and clothing habits. Don't just guess.
